The Society of United Language Students (SoULS) of the College of Arts and Humanities (CAH) met known linguist Stephen Krashen in a virtual discussion on ‘Doing Research in English Language Studies Amidst Global Challenges,’ conducted via Zoom and YouTube on December 18 and 19, 2020. The virtual discussion was organized by the English Department of Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU – IIT).
Stephen Krashen, the emeritus professor of the University of Southern California addressed the ‘Fundamentals of Language Acquisition, or 45 Years of Progress’. Krashen spoke about the importance of literature and reading in language acquisition. He also emphasized the significance of writing and how revising, and drafting can give better ideas on the piece one is working on.
After his substantive discussion, the professor answered all the questions posed by the viewers of the live stream and the Zoom attendees. When asked about having literature as a means of teaching English as a second language, the professor strongly agreed to its effectiveness and contribution. Krashen further noted that literature is “the heart of language teaching.”
MSU–IIT also invited other speakers who discussed their input and findings on various researches such as “Writing Assessment: Literacy for the Online Classroom” by Analynn P. Bustamante, a Ph.D. candidate from Georgia State University, and “Analyzing Classroom Discourse in Online Classes” by Francisco P. Dumanig Jr., Ph.D. from University of Hawaii on the first day. Together with Prof. Stephen Krashen on the second day was Amado C. Guinto, Jr., currently studying his doctorate degree in Comparative Literature at the University of the Philippines - Diliman, with his talk on “To the Tune of The Kulintangan: The Case of Transplanting Shakespeare and Reimagining Valmiki in Mindanao.”
The SoULS has been attending virtual discussions related to English language since the first semester of online classes SY 2020-2021.
