Last December 16, 2020, the College of Arts and Humanities (CAH) of the University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC) continued its annual tradition of giving back for the benefit of their chosen foundation, Bukas Palad Foundation, located at Sto. Niño Rafael, Castillo Street, Agdao, Davao City.
The CAH spearheaded the event by collaborating with its academic clubs, particularly the Communicators’ Organization for Development and Excellence (CODE), Society of United Language Students (SoULS) and Philosophia Society (PhilSoc). Also, for this year, the Society of Aspiring Psychologists (SOAP) joined the said event.
Despite the global pandemic, the Dean of CAH, Dr. Grace Aoanan, College Academic Coordinator, Dr. Danilo Baradillo, college officers, and the club mayors made the event possible. They did their best to continue giving love through sharing their blessings to the young ones, especially during the Christmas season.
Instead of conducting the usual Christmas party for the beneficiaries, they have decided to have an alternative way of extending to the foundation, “No pandemic can stop us from reaching out to our fellow countrymen. Even in our small ways, we can still make other people happy,” said Lyka Bersaluna, the College Governor.
Bersaluna coordinated with the program head of the foundation to plan the proper distribution of gifts. Since there were no collection of departmental fees and club fees during the school year, the college officers, together with the college dean and coordinator, agreed to use the remaining funds of the previous semester. The academic clubs also used their initiative and found their way to gather some amount as their contribution to the event.
The event’s preparation took almost a week. The repacking of gifts happened at the college governor’s residence to assure that the gifts given to the beneficiaries are clean and safe.
Since the city is under the General Community Quarantine (GCQ) and while adapting to the so-called 'new normal,' the college governor, together with the SOAP treasurer, made sure to follow the protocols Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) throughout the repacking up to the distribution. They have decided to drop off the gifts to the community leaders instead of doing their usual activities to secure their safety and social distancing.
